The VW Passat has always successfully bridged the gap between similar-sized mainstream rivals and more premium options, and this ninth-generation model is the best yet. It's a comfortable, refined and hugely practical choice with a smart interior, plus it can make a cheap company car. If you do buy one, we think the 1.5 TSI eHybrid engine is a good choice, while entry-level Life trim gives you plenty of standard kit.

Mid-level Elegance trim adds heated front seats, extra massage settings for the front seats, a panoramic glass sunroof, additional ambient lighting colour options and the acoustic pack (with added sound deadening and laminated windows).

Like the regular 1.5 TSI eHybrid, this model has a huge electric range that helps it qualify for a lowly 5% company car tax rating. However, it produces an extra 67bhp (taking the total to 268bhp) and cuts the 0-62mph time from 8.2 seconds to 7.1 seconds. It makes a pricey private buy, though.
