When viewing a used car, always follow our used car buying checklist.
Despite coming with lots of standard safety equipment, including automatic emergency braking (AEB) and lane-departure warning, the 408 achieved a four-star rating (out of five) when it was crash-tested by safety experts Euro NCAP – the same as the C5 X and the DS 4 – and was mainly let down by a weak level of driver protection in a front impact.
What are the most common problems with a used Peugeot 408 saloon?
As of writing, the 408 has just one recall to its name. It's only affected nine vehicles and describes the possibility of electrical connections overheating. Tightening certain fixings will solve the problem and your Peugeot dealer should be able to sort that for you (for free).

Is a used Peugeot 408 saloon reliable?
The Peugeot 408 is yet to appear in our What Car? Reliability Survey. However, as a car brand, Peugeot ranked 21st out of 32 manufacturers featured. Its reliability score of 90.5% makes Peugeot cars more reliable than Alfa Romeo and Vauxhalls, but less reliable than Ford and Skodas, for instance.
Based on that alone, the 408 should be more reliable than the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, but less reliable than the Skoda Octavia Estate.
