19 July 2018 – compare and contrast

Part of the purpose in running a used long-termer such as our one-year-old, first-generation XC60 is to see whether it compares favourably with any newer versions. As such, I’ve been out and about in the latest second-generation model to see what it's like – and a fine thing it is, too.

How does it compare with our car? It’s much better, if I’m honest, in nearly every area. It looks nicer, is plusher and more stylish inside, has a vastly improved – although by no means perfect – infotainment set-up, has lighter and more direct steering, feels quicker, is much more refined, handles better, is better equipped and probably more economical.

It feels like a completely different car. But, of course, such superiority costs. Our car is worth around £22,500, bought from a dealer, while a current XC60 Momentum D4 will set you back £37,770, albeit for a four-wheel-drive model, whereas ours is front-wheel drive only.

So what does that prove? Is it worth the extra? Well, if you can afford it, yes, I’m rather afraid it is.
