Used test: Audi Q5 vs Porsche Macan vs Volvo XC60 costs
These prestige SUVs all look great value at five years old, but which of them should you actually buy?...
Buying and owning
Costs, equipment, reliability, safety and security
Prices for the Volvo XC60, in our test car’s D4 R-Design form, start at around £26,000 for a car with an average mileage. For a similar-mileage Audi Q5 in 2.0 TDI quattro S line guise, as we have here, expect to pay a similar amount.
The Porsche Macan, as we suggested earlier, is the priciest of the three. You can pick up a five-year-old Diesel S version with an average mileage for around £35,000, although that does represent a good discount off new.
All three cars have a respectable amount of basic kit, but you might want to find a Macan that had one or two options ticked from new to bring it up to the level of the others. We’d also recommend seeking out Q5s with the sliding rear seats and Technology Pack, because it brings the upgraded infotainment and Virtual Cockpit display. For the comfiest ride, get one with air suspension.
With the XC60, think about looking out for Apple CarPlay smartphone mirroring and the Intellisafe Pro kit, with its extra safety gear and semi-autonomous driving feature. For the Macan, again we’d recommend checking out models equipped with air suspension and the Comfort Package – mainly for lumbar adjustment, although it also adds full leather seat trim.
Looking at fuel economy, we found the Q5 to be the most efficient during testing, averaging 41mpg. The XC60 came second with an average of 36.5mpg, while the Macan was third, averaging 32.8mpg. In post-April 2017 form, all three will cost you £165 a year in car tax, plus a £355 annual luxury surcharge (until they're six years old) if they cost more than £40,000 when they were new.
Both the Q5 and XC60 belong to insurance group 31, meaning they should cost around £835 each to insure each year. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Macan resides in the highest group of our trio, that being 39. As such, it'll cost around £983 per year. Audi offers fixed-price servicing, with the Q5 coming in at £480 for two services. If you choose to service your Macan through Porsche, expect a hefty bill of around £875 for just one service. For a service of the XC60, it comes in at £350.
When it comes to reliability, the Macan comes out on top. In our latest What Car? Reliability Survey, it placed first out of 11 cars in the luxury SUV category. The Q5 and XC60 were ranked in the large SUV category, coming 23rd and 22nd (respectively) out of 32 cars. As brands, Audi placed 21st out of 32 manufacturers, while Porsche was 19th and Volvo 17th.
During crash testing by Euro NCAP, all three cars earned its maximum five-star rating for safety.
