Used test: BMW X2 vs Volvo XC40 costs
You can save more than £10,000 on either of these prestige family SUVs by buying used, but which car should you choose? We have the answer...
What will they cost?
New, the BMW X2 would have cost you slightly more to buy than the Volvo XC40, but here, at four years old, it will cost you £2000 less – £23,000 compared with £25,000. That’s good news if you’re buying one now, but bear in mind that it’s lost more of its value over four years than the XC40, and that heavier depreciation is likely to continue over the next few years, adding to your overall running costs.
The X2 is likely to cost you less to fuel – its official average is 58.9mpg whereas the XC40's is 56.5mpg – but its insurance and servicing costs are higher. Both will cost you £155 per year in road tax.
The X2 placed fourth out of 28 cars in the family SUV class of our most recent What Car? Reliability Survey. The XC40 also manages an impressive result, coming eighth. BMW as a brand finished 13th out of 30 manufacturers featured, and Volvo ranked 19th.
Both cars get automatic emergency braking (AEB) as standard, and the XC40 adds lane-departure warning. Both cars scored the full five stars out of five after their Euro NCAP safety tests.
