19 December – Why it's worth doing your safety research

Isn’t amazing how much time we’ll spend choosing a car, but how little time we’ll spend researching its safety credentials?

Safety organisation Euro NCAP has made it easy for buyers to assess whether a car is safe by creating a one-stop five-star rating system. Lucky us.

There's more to it than just a star rating, though, and you don’t have to work too hard to make more use of the research by downloading Euro NCAP’s full crash test data, which is presented in a very easy to understand manner.

Take the 5008: it might have five stars and reassuring scores of 86% for adult protection and 85% for child protection, but what of its rather lower 67% score for pedestrian protection and 58% for safety assistance systems? Should they be cause for worry?

As Euro NCAP’s website explains, both could be improved, but in terms of relative safety the Peugeot 5008 stacks up well against rivals. Not all cars are as good, though - and that’s got to be worth investigating before you buy.
