Hyundai i10

This is undoubtedly the Hyundai i10's biggest failing. Sat-nav and a DAB radio aren't even on the options list. What's more, the small monochrome display is tricky to read while driving and the Bluetooth system is fiddly to use. However, you get a radio with four speakers that delivers reasonable sound quality, plus a USB socket to plug your phone into and listen to music stored on it.

Renault Twingo

You get a DAB radio, Bluetooth and a USB socket as standard in the Renault Twingo, but the interface is decidedly unintuitive – not least because of the tiny monochrome display. A cradle above the radio allows you to attach your smartphone and run a free R&Go app, which features sat-nav and internet radio. However, an extra £600 gets you a more sophisticated 7.0in touchscreen with a reversing camera and live traffic updates.

Volkswagen Up

The latest Volkswagen Up gets a brand new 5.0in colour screen, through which you control the Bluetooth system and the DAB radio. The interface is very intuitive by city car standards, and if you download the free Maps+ More app to your phone you can attach it to the cradle on top of the dashboard and use it as a sat-nav. Sound quality through the standard six-speaker stereo is excellent and there's a USB socket on top of the dashboard.
