New Honda e:Ny1 vs used Volvo XC40 Recharge practicality

For the eco-conscious family, an electric SUV can be an enticing prospect, but should they splash out on a new e:Ny1 or go for a used, similarly priced XC40 Recharge?...

Space and practicality

Front space, rear space, seating flexibility, boot

Up front, the Volvo XC40 has plenty of space for six-footers, but there’s more head and leg room in the Honda e:Ny1. The latter is even more generous when it comes to rear leg room (although the XC40 is hardly short of it), but tall passengers will be strapped for head room in the e:Ny1.

Then again, the e:Ny1 has a near-enough flat floor in the rear, whereas the XC40 has a prominent hump in the centre, so the former is more comfortable for a middle passenger.

Volvo XC40 Recharge rear seats

You’ll find 60/40 split-folding rear seatbacks in both cars. When folded down, they lie flush with the boot floor, but only the e:Ny1’s floor is adjustable for height. On the other hand, unlike the e:Ny1, the XC40 has a handy ski hatch to allow you to poke long items through from the boot between two rear passengers, plus extra storage space beneath the bonnet. It has usefully more space in the main boot, too, with room for eight carry-on suitcases, compared with five in the e:Ny1.
