Introducing EV36Zero: the carbon neutral future of electric car production

Since the launch of the all-electric Nissan LEAF in 2010, Nissan has been a global leader in sustainable e-mobility. Today, it offers an expanded range of electrified vehicles that also includes the electric Nissan e-NV200 van, the new Nissan Qashqai hybrid and the soon-to-be-launched all-electric Nissan ARIYA.

Nissan isn’t solely focused on reducing the emissions of the cars we drive, though. It’s also rethinking how electric cars are made – targeting a future in which vehicle manufacturing is truly carbon neutral. The result is EV36Zero: a flagship facility, centred on the already world-beating Nissan Sunderland plant, that sets a blueprint for the future of the automotive industry.

A £1bn collaboration between Nissan, world-leading battery experts Envision AESC and Sunderland City Council, EV36Zero will bring together vehicle manufacturing, battery production and renewable energy in one 360-degree ecosystem.

It will include a state-of-the-art 9GWh gigafactory, which can make enough next-gen batteries each year to power 100,000 electric Nissan cars. These advanced batteries will be 30% more energy dense, helping Nissan’s designers create future electric models that are more efficient and can travel further.

A first-of-its-kind 100% renewable energy microgrid will build on Nissan Sunderland’s existing 12MW wind and solar farm – providing up to 132MW of clean solar energy for EV36Zero and saving 55,000 tonnes of carbon per year. It includes 1MW of second-life battery storage to retain excess energy created during the day for use at other times, finding a fresh new purpose for used electric car batteries.

"EV36Zero is part of Nissan's pioneering efforts to achieve carbon neutrality throughout the entire lifecycle of our products,” said Nissan President and Chief Executive Officer Makoto Uchida. “Our comprehensive approach includes not only the development and production of EVs, but also the use of on-board batteries as energy storage and their reuse for secondary purposes.”

Looking ahead, EV36Zero will lead the production of 100,000 all-new 100% electric Nissan crossovers each year – adding to the 245,000+ vehicles already made at Nissan Sunderland (including the Nissan LEAF and the new Nissan Qashqai).
