What should I look for in a used MG MG4 hatchback?

There isn't anything specific to the MG4 to look out for yet. It's worth noting that you'll need to go for Trophy trim or the XPower to maximise safety kit. These versions add blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and lane-change assistance. You get automatic emergency braking (AEB) and lane-keeping assistance on all models, though.
The MG4 scored the full five stars for safety when it was tested by Euro NCAP, although it's worth noting that adult occupant crash protection was found to be significantly better in the Born.

Is a used MG MG4 hatchback reliable?
Our data suggests the MG4 is an unreliable car. It performed poorly in the 2023 What Car? Reliability Survey, ranking 18th out of 20 cars in the electric car class, and its reliability score was 76.1%. As a brand, MG finished 25th out of 32 manufacturers.
Bodywork and non-motor electrical issues were the main complaints from the 37.5% of MG4 owners who told us that their car had gone wrong. Although 80% of the afflicted cars were fixed for free, 20% of owners faced bills of £1000 to £1500, and 70% of the cars were laid up for more than a week.
In our 2024 survey, the MG4 performed even more poorly, receiving a reliability score of just 63.8%. More reliable alternatives include the Cupra Born and Tesla Model 3.
Used MG4: owners' reliability data
As part of our 2023 Reliability Survey, What Car? readers said the MG4 demonstrates poor reliability. Several owners reported issues with electrical faults, such as software glitches and warning lights appearing on the dashboard. A few mentioned that these problems were intermittent, leading to frustration.
Feedback on dealership service was mixed. While some praised their local MG dealerships for being helpful and resolving issues promptly, others expressed dissatisfaction. Delays in repairs and parts availability were common complaints, with some owners mentioning that faults took longer than expected to fix. A handful of customers noted that despite their vehicles being relatively new, they experienced recurring problems that required multiple trips to the dealer.
