Many rivals outshine the C-Class in terms of interior quality, but it does have its strengths, especially in C300e plug-in hybrid form. The C300e has a long electric range, which makes for a low company car tax rate, and its standard rear air suspension does wonders for striking a fine balance between ride comfort and cornering composure.

This trim level gets a 12.3in digital driver display and an 11.9in portrait-oriented central touchscreen with the latest MBUX infotainment system that includes wireless smartphone integration and a reversing camera. There’s also LED headlights, blind-spot monitoring, leather trim and heated front seats.

The plug-in hybrid C300e will be of most interest to company car drivers. The electric motor is more than capable of keeping up with traffic up to motorway speeds, and the official electric range of up to 60 miles is double the BMW 330e's. You get 308bhp when the petrol engine kicks in (which happens seamlessly), giving a 0-62mph time of 6.1sec.
