Sharp looks and plenty of standard equipment add to the E-Pace’s appeal, but an unsettled ride, below-par efficiency and poor reliability detract from the overall package. Ultimately, the Range Rover Evoque and Volvo XC40 are more comfortable, plusher inside and more practical, while also depreciating more slowly.

This mid-spec trim gets everything you’ll find on R-Dynamic S models but adds extra kit, including larger 19in alloy wheels, a panoramic roof, keyless entry and an upgraded Meridian sound system. It doesn’t add too much to the price tag, but we still think you’re better off with the entry-level trim.

Our favourite engine is the D200 diesel. It's much stronger and can officially haul the E-Pace to 60mph from a standstill in a respectable 8.0 seconds.
