What's the used Ford MUSTANG MACH-E estate like?

The Ford Mustang Mach-E is about as closely related to the principal Ford Mustang as Simon Cowell is to a Teletubby, with one being an electric SUV and the other a V8-engined coupé.

Why do they share a Mustang badge, then? Well, Ford essentially hoped that the sporty appeal and popularity of its iconic pony car would rub off on the Mach-E and result in sales galore.

Overview

With its strong range, performance and good practicality, the Mach-E looks like great on paper. The execution isn't quite up to scratch, though. For example, the driving experience (especially true of examples prior to spring 2022) lags behind class leaders.

  • Generous amount of standard equipment
  • Extended Range versions have a very long range
  • Good infotainment system
  • Poor ride on earlier models
  • Inconsistent handling
  • So-so build quality for the class

Time will tell, but so far sales have been good. Critically, the model didn't hit the ground running, though. When the Mach-E first hit the UK, the ride didn't feel properly set up for our roads. It would jostle and buck you around, the car feeling unsettled on anything but silky smooth roads. Fortunately, models from spring 2022 and beyond got a revised suspension that improved ride comfort.

It hasn't become a luxury car, but the ride is much more composed now. The Mach-E GT model, with its adaptive suspension and lower ride height, feels even more tied down and settled, giving you the confidence to drive swiftly.

As for all Mach-Es, handling is average for the class. It's playful and entertaining at times, although you can find yourself struggling to connect with the quick but inconsistently weighted steering, not to mention there’s not a great sense of grip from the front tyres.

One area where the Mach-E has always impressed, though, is in its electric range and performance. The entry-level Standard Range RWD (rear-wheel drive) has an official range of 273 miles and, in our real-world range test, it managed a respectable 211. Its 265bhp motor delivers a 0-62mph time of 6.9 sec – plenty of poke for most situations and almost two seconds faster than the VW ID 4 Pro Performance.

The Extended Range RWD model has 290bhp, but with a bigger battery to haul around, it's fractionally (0.1sec) slower than Standard Range models. Its official range is a remarkable 372 miles and, in our range tests, it covered 302 miles in summer weather, and 247 in winter.

The four-wheel-drive version, dubbed the Extended Range AWD, packs 346bhp via its dual electric motors, so acceleration is super brisk. You'll see 0-62mph in 5.8sec.

If performance tops your priorities list, then the Mach-E GT is your best choice. The GT has more powerful electric motors for a combined 480bhp and a 0-62mph time of 4.4sec. That's impressive, if not quite as quick as the Tesla Model Y Performance or Kia EV6 GT. It has an official range of 310 miles, against 319 for the Model Y Performance.

Inside, the driving position is pretty good, even if the manually adjustable seat that comes with the entry-level trim has a fiddly lever to adjust the backrest angle and no variable lumbar support. It does have height adjustment, though.

The Mach-E driver's seat is comfortable on a long trip but lacks side support through corners (the driving seat of the VW ID 4 is much better). An eight-way electrically adjustable front seat comes with all AWD models, and that includes plenty of lumbar adjustment. The range-topping Mach-E GT models get comfy sports seats.

Some of the plastics and faux-leather trim is a bit too shiny and cheap-looking. To the Mach-E’s credit, its interior features fewer hard plastics than the ID 4 and it’s no worse for fit and finish than the Model Y.

The infotainment software is responsive, with clear graphics and a relatively logical layout. It's not far off the effectiveness of the Model Y's and much better than in the ID 4. The screen also features multiple sections called cards, each displaying a different application, such as the media player or the sat-nav, at the same time.

You get built-in sat-nav, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone capability (so you can use your phone apps on the screen) and a wireless phone charger.

All Mach-Es come well equipped, with the entry-level model fitted with heated front seats, a heated windscreen, a heated steering wheel, adaptive cruise control, keyless entry, 18in alloy wheels, privacy glass and two-zone climate control.

The Extended Range versions get 19in wheels, red brake calipers, ambient lighting, adaptive LED headlights, electric front seat adjustment, and piano-black exterior highlights. The AWD models add a Tech Pack that includes a panoramic sunroof and a hands-free powered tailgate. The performance-focused GT gets a sportier look, 20in wheels and sports seats up front, as well as the aforementioned performance upgrades.

While there’s plenty of head room in the front of the Mach-E, its sloping roofline eats into the height in the rear. The Model Y and the ID 4 both have more rear head room. However, the Mach-E shades both for knee room in the back.

In terms of practicality, the main boot has a useful height-adjustable floor that removes the annoying load lip many rivals have. It has 402 litres of volume, which is big enough to fit seven carry-on cases under the tonneau cover, plus a front boot with another 100 litres of space. It's designed to be hosed out and features a drain plug so it's a good place to store muddy boots.

Rival electric SUVs can manage more luggage, with the Toyota bZ4X taking eight carry-on cases, the ID.4 nine and the Model Y an impressive 10.

Ownership cost

What used Ford MUSTANG MACH-E estate will I get for my budget?

Around £30,000 will secure you a 2020 Mustang Mach-E Standard Range RWD. Expect the condition to be very good and mileage to be less than 50,000. The Extended Range RWD jumps to around £35,000, while the Extended Range AWD currently comes in at around £1000 more than that. The GT arrived in 2021 and examples go for upwards of £44,000.

If you'd like a 2022 Mach-E (and we think you will in order to get the revised suspension), have a budget of around £33,000 at least.

How much does it cost to run a Ford MUSTANG MACH-E estate?

Charging

If you go for an Extended Range model with the 91kWh (usable) battery, the Mach-E can charge at a maximum rate of 150kW. That means a 10-80% charge is possible in around 45 minutes. The Standard Range model is capable of 115kW, but as the battery is smaller, you can get a 10-80% charge in as little as 38 minutes. At a typical 50kW motorway service station charger, you can expect a 10-80% charge in around 75 minutes.

Insurance and servicing

Insurance groups range from the high 30s to high 40s (out of 50), depending on your chosen variant.

If your Mach-E is more than three years old, Ford will sell you its essential service for £209.

Our recommendations

Which used Ford MUSTANG MACH-E estate should I buy?

The Extended Range RWD, with its super long range, is worth strongly considering if you do plenty of miles. The Standard Range RWD doesn't have a bad range, though, and it's £5000 cheaper to buy.

However, we would recommend spending an extra £3000 and finding yourself a Standard Range RWD built after spring 2022. This is so you get the suspension changes that vastly improve the driving experience.

The Mach-E gets a lot of kit from the get go and you don't have to worry much about trims – each variant (Standard Range, Extended Range and GT) gets its own set of kit – unless you go for a 2023 car, because Select and Premium trims came about during that year. These trims are only now hitting the used market, so we wouldn't pay too much attention to them just yet.

Alternatives

What alternatives should I consider to a used Ford MUSTANG MACH-E estate?

The Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5 are two great alternatives. They can't quite match the Mach-E in terms of outright performance and range, but both are more spacious inside and the EV6 has a classier interior. The Ioniq 5 will cost you a few grand less than a Mach-E will, while an EV6 will cost you about the same as a Mach-E.

With its prestigious badge and sub-£30,000 used prices, a 2018-present Jaguar I-Pace will swoon you and your Mach-E budget. It's also entertaining yet comfortable to drive, while its interior is suitably premium. Beware of sketchy reliability, though, because it ranked eighth out of 9 electric SUVs featured in the 2023 What Car? Reliability Survey.
