The BMW X5 is a smooth, classy and luxurious SUV. It's not quite as practical as the most spacious rivals out there but it's good enough where it counts, and where it really impresses is the quality of its lavish interior and superb infotainment system. The xDrive50e plug-in hybrid with M Sport trim is the one to go for.

xLine is the entry-level trim, but comes with plenty of luxuries, including an automatic tailgate, the latest iDrive system with over-the-air updates, heated seats front and rear, automatic air conditioning, cruise control with brake function and 19in alloy wheels. If you want the diesel option and to keep the cost down, it would suit you well.

This diesel engine gives you a 294bhp 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine to play with. It’s a strong engine, pulling effortlessly from low rev, even when towing, and sprinting from 0-62mph in 6.1sec. That’s about a second faster than the equivalent Audi Q7 45 TDI. It’s efficient, too, officially managing around 40mpg.
