What should I look for in a used BMW X4 estate?
Some X4s might not venture far out of urban environments, so check the alloy wheels for kerb any damage and the bodywork for little dings caused by doors and trolleys in car parks.
Even if it seems unlikely that the X4 in question had been used as a family car, inspect the interior for any broken bits of trim or stains in carpets and seats.
What are the most common problems with a used BMW X4 estate?
Rear brake calipers
The rear brake calipers on examples built between 16 April 2018 and 8 June 2018 might not have been made to the correct specification, which could result in reduced braking performance. You may also notice a soft brake pedal. Check with a local BMW dealer to find out if your car is affected.
Front seat belt buckles
The cabling for the electrical connection in the front seat belt buckles has been found to be too short in some examples built between 15 January and 14 February 2020, which could compromise safety. If this applies to your X4, it'll need to be inspected at a BMW dealership and be replaced if found to be faulty.
Is a used BMW X4 estate reliable?
The X4 didn't feature in our latest What Car? Reliability Survey, but its mechanically similar sibling, the X3, did. In petrol form, it placed first out of 21 car in the large SUV category. Its diesel counterpart ranked fourth. BMW as a brand came 13th out of 30 manufacturers featured.
