What should I look for in a used Audi TT coupe?

Check for kerb damage to the large alloys and any bodywork scuffs, as the TT will have been used with enthusiasm. Earlier cars had reported problems with wear to the side bolsters of the leather seats, as well as squeaking front brake pads, so it’s worth looking out for both of those.

What are the most common problems with a used Audi TT coupe?

The Audi TT has been the subject of the following recalls. Check with your local Audi dealer that all the faults have been attended to.

Fuel tank

The fuel tank could be damaged in the event of a collision, the fuel tank can be damaged on examples manufactured between 29 April 2014 and 24 May 2019. Find out from your local Audi dealer if your example is affected because it'll need to have a shield installed between the bracket and the tank itself to prevent it from being damaged.

Front airbag

If a front airbag is deployed it is possible that the gas generator housing in which the propellant is generated may burst on vehicles manufactured within a limited period.

Power unit

The design trim on the power unit can become detached from its retainers.

Curtain airbag

A curtain airbag cannot be guaranteed to provide the intended protection in the event of an accident.

Is a used Audi TT coupe reliable?

The good news is reported problems are few.

In our 2024 What Car? Reliability Survey, the TT finished fourth out of 13 cars in the coupés, convertibles and sports cars category with a great score of 98.4%. In our 2023 survey it even manged to finish in the top slot with the same score.

Reliability rating 98.4%

What went wrong? Air-con 7%

The Audi TT looks great, is fun to drive and, above all, is dependable. A mere 7% of the cars reported on had any issues – all relating to the air-con system – and all of those were resolved at no cost to owners. All the faulty cars could still be driven, and only the fact that niggles took up to a week to repair took some of the gloss from the ownership experience.

Owner’s view: “My first TT was reliable enough to prompt me to buy my second.”

As a brand, Audi finished a rather disappointing 27th out of 32 manufacturers with an overall score of 89.1%. This put it above Alfa Romeo, Jaguar and Vauxhall, but below nearly all of its main rivals, including BMW, Mercedes and Volkswagen.

Used Audi TT reliability: the owners' view

The consensus from owners is that the TT boasts commendable reliability, with very few reports of significant mechanical failures. There were reports of minor electronic issues, but these were typically resolved without inconvenience.

Regarding the dealer service experience, opinions varied more significantly. While some owners praised their local dealerships for professional and prompt service, others were less satisfied, citing slow service responses and the high costs for repairs.

Despite these critiques, the majority of feedback on dealer interactions was positive, with a particular appreciation for the thoroughness of the technical support. The overall picture painted by TT owners is one of a reliable sports car with generally supportive dealer service.
