You’ll no doubt have heard the term ‘lifestyle vehicle’, but what exactly does it mean? Well, it’s essentially a catch-all term for a vehicle that is so versatile and flexible that it’s ready to take on any challenge thrown its way. That’s why we reckon the Ford Tourneo Custom, particularly in Active trim, is the ultimate do-it-all lifestyle vehicle. 

Want proof? Well, not only does the Active have SUV-inspired looks thanks to its chunky body cladding, roof rails and handy side steps, but it’s actually far more adept at carrying all your friends and family than any SUV currently on sale. Look over your shoulder and you’ll find six rear chairs that can be positioned individually or removed completely. They give the Tourneo Custom a level of flexibility that a traditional SUV or a smaller MPV like the Citroën Berlingo can’t hope to offer. Ford even offers an internal bike carrier that locks into the seat mounts.

From behind the wheel, the Tourneo Custom feels much more like a normal SUV than rivals do. It has sharper steering than the Mercedes V-Class, better body control than the Citroën SpaceTourer and a more supple ride than the Volkswagen Caravelle. It’s capable of delivering properly punchy performance if you opt for Ford’s 182bhp 2.0-litre diesel engine (there’s also a less powerful version of the same engine, with 128bhp), and there’s plenty of traction if you tick the box for the optional mechanical limited-slip differential (only available on manual models).

Once you’ve factored in the smart interior, user-friendly infotainment system and tonnes of standard kit (including lumbar support on both front seats), the Ford Tourneo Custom Active is one of the best family cars out there in any class.
