Used test: Mazda MX-5 vs Toyota GT86: verdict
Fun doesn't have to be an expensive commodity, as the Mazda MX-5 and Toyota GT86 prove. Which is the more accomplished used buy? We find out...
Our verdict
The Toyota GT86 is the sharper, more focused car to drive, not to mention the more practical choice and the sole option for those who demand a metal roof. It's just a shame that its engine can feel lacklustre and its interior is far from modern and refined.
The Mazda MX-5 doesn't share those faults, plus it costs less to buy and run. It isn't all sensible, though. The MX-5's small dimensions and convertible thrills are easily able to put a smile on your face, making it a joy to drive as well as live with. It takes the win.
