Used test: Jaguar F-Pace vs Porsche Macan
These two fast and practical SUVs from Jaguar and Porsche can be had much cheaper bought used, but which one makes the most sense? We have the answer...
What will they cost?
Though the Jaguar F-Pace was £2000 more to buy when new, according to the list prices, it’s now the cheaper by around £1000. This looks good on paper, though it’s worth pointing out this may well be an indication of its lower residual values, in which case if it continues depreciating at a higher rate it may well cost you more in overall running costs.
You also need to combine the stronger residual values of the Porsche Macan with lower servicing costs and better fuel economy (equally matched officially, but 26.4mpg vs 25.4mpg in our tests).
The only disappointment with the Macan is that while lane departure warning is standard, automatic emergency braking isn’t; it was available only in conjunction with the expensive option of adaptive cruise control when the car was new, and not every buyer took up this offer. That’s disappointing when you consider that this feature is standard on not only the F-Pace but also some low-priced city cars.
However, the Macan did well in our most recent reliability survey, finishing in third place in its class, with what few problems owners encountered being fixed within a day, and mostly under warranty. The F-Pace ranked in the middle of the class. Neither brand did very well overall in the same survey: Porsche finished in 23rd place out of 31 manufacturers, while Jaguar finished in 26th place.
