Used test: Ford Focus ST vs Honda Civic Type R: verdict

Our verdict

Both of these cars are definitely better value bought at this age, but it’s the Civic Type R that ultimately wins the battle. It is, above all else, a brilliant driver’s car.

And it works its magic whether you’re on the road or a track. You don’t need to be going hell for leather, experiencing its phenomenal grip, to appreciate its virtues, either. Even at respectable road speeds, you can savour its beautifully weighted controls: the gearlever, brakes and steering.

The ST is still a fine hot hatch, though, and it successfully embodies most of the traditions of those older fast Fords. It’s quick, its playful handling is a delight and, as a bonus, it’s cheaper to buy at this age than the Type R.
