Used test: Audi SQ5 vs Range Rover Evoque vs Porsche Macan costs
The Porsche Macan is a great sports SUV, but is a used diesel S a better buy than the popular Range Rover Evoque or more powerful Audi SQ5?...
Buying and owning
Costs, equipment, reliability, safety and security
The Range Rover Evoque is the cheapest of the trio to buy, costing just £16,000 after nine years on the used market. The Audi SQ5 is more expensive at £19,000, while the Porsche Macan is considerably more expensive still at £25,000.
The Porsche will have the best residual values going forward, however, and if you plan to keep your car for a few years you can factor in the Macan's more expensive purchase price against the money you'll likely lose in depreciation on the other two cars.
Both the SQ5 and Macan pipped the Evoque in our real-world economy tests. The Evoque's 38mpg effort was bested by the SQ5's 39.1mpg average and the Macan's 40.3mpg average.
Remarkably, despite the Macan having a bigger engine than the Evoque, both SUVs cost the same amount in yearly road tax (VED) at £240. The SQ5 costs more at £320.
For an SQ5 service plan comprised of two services, Audi quoted us £636. For two services of the Evoque, Land Rover quoted us a pretty steep £1561. The Macan proved even pricier, with Porsche quoting us £1872 for two services.
The SQ5 is the most expensive car to insure, though. Its insurance group of 41 means it should cost you around £1015. The Macan's group of 39 should put costs at around £983. The Evoque belongs to group 34, so you should be set back around £886.
In our latest What Car? Reliability Survey, the Evoque performed poorly, placing 37th out of 38 cars in the family SUV class. The SQ5 didn't specifically make an appearance, but the normal (diesel) Q5 did and it ranked last of 32 cars in the large SUV class, so that's not very confidence inspiring either. On the other hand, the Macan finished in first place out of 11 cars in the luxury SUV class.
All three cars get climate control, auto lights and wipers, a multi-function steering wheel, rear parking sensors and an alarm. The Macan is the only one that doesn’t get genuine leather upholstery, xenon headlights or cruise control as standard from new, while the Evoque is the only one to get a rear-view camera.
Each challenger here got a five-star Euro NCAP rating, but there are significant differences between each rating. The SQ5, once again evaluated in its regular Q5 form, is best for front adult occupancy; the Macan for rear seat child and pedestrian protection, while the Evoque came out on top for safety assistance technology.
