With demand for used cars on the rise, you’ll want to know which are the best buys. That’s where our annual Used Car Awards come in. These are our favourite MPVs...
Volkswagen Touran
Price from £13,000
The Volkswagen Touran offers the box-on-wheels practicality you’d expect from a people carrier, but what sets it apart here is that it’s got the kind of premium feel and car-like handling that will please drivers and passengers alike.
Take the way the Touran drives, for example. It’s quiet and comfortable, while the 1.4-litre petrol engine we recommend has plenty of pulling power – even when all seven seats are filled.
If you crave an involving driving style, the Ford Galaxy is even better, but the Touran edges that car out here because of its superior interior quality, with dense plastics and a feeling that it’s built to last, plus lots of kit in mid-range SE trim.
While the Citroën Grand C4 Picasso – also a seven-seater – is similarly spacious, the Touran comes with an infotainment system that’s easier to get along with, is quieter at speed and is easier to thread around city streets. In fact, it succeeds in handling like a much smaller car.
The icing on the cake is that you can find good examples for less than £15,000, which is half what the Touran cost new.

Citroën Grand C4 Picasso (2014-2018)
If you have around £10,000 to spend and can live without some of the Touran’s added refinement, few cars can match the practicality of the Grand C4 Picasso. Even with all seven seats filled, the boot is large enough for a family’s holiday luggage, and the 1.6-litre BlueHDi diesel engine we recommend has decent low-end pulling power for hauling it all around. Plus, the interior is more inviting than that of a Vauxhall Zafira Tourer for similar money.

Ford Galaxy (2015-present)
The Galaxy becomes a strong contender if you plan to do lots of journey with six passengers on board because its third row of (two) seats is more spacious than in other seven-seaters. When teamed with our favourite 2.0-litre diesel engine, it has more than enough grunt to get you up to speed quickly. Although you could get a BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer for similar money, the Galaxy beats that car when it comes to handling.
