Alfa Romeo Stelvio
What Car? deal: Save £2581 on a 2.2D 210 Sprint or up to £4894 on the Alfa Romeo Stelvio range | Target Price £43,769 | Target PCP £516 per month
Looking for a family SUV that's a little bit different? Enter the Alfa Romeo Stelvio. It's an SUV which rivals the BMW X3 and Porsche Macan, and offers sharp styling, entertaining handling and competitive running costs. Standard equipment is generous, too; this entry-level Sprint version comes with adaptive cruise control, automatic headlights (with auto high beam), automatic windscreen wipers and aluminium gearshift paddles as standard. It's not the most spacious option for those in the back seats, though.

Audi Q7
What Car? deal: Save £4678 on a 55 TFSI Quattro S Line or up to £7575 on the Audi Q7 range | Target Price £65,327 | Target PCP £741 per month
The Q7 is one of the best cars of its kind. It's relaxing to drive and comfortable to sit in, while the interior is plush enough to shame most luxury saloons. As if all that weren't enough, the Q7 is extremely practical, offering plenty of space for families and their luggage. Out of the broad engine line-up, which includes V6 or V8 offerings, we think the 3.0-litre V6 petrol (badged 55 TFSI) is the best option. It's gutsy enough at low revs, so you don’t need to work it hard – and with 335bhp, acceleration is very strong. Fuel economy aside, there’s lots to like about it, including its quiet and smooth nature.

BMW X1
What Car? deal: Save £2361 on an sDrive20i MHT xLine or up to £3436 on the BMW X1 range | Target Price £35,079 | Target PCP £396 per month
The X1 might be BMW's smallest SUV, but it certainly doesn't feel like it when you're sat inside. Indeed, this family SUV offers a vast amount of head and leg room in the back, with plenty of space for three adults to sit comfortably. It's a similar story in the boot; there's up to 500 litres of storage volume, which is around 60 litres more than what you get in a Volvo XC40. The version quoted here is powered by the entry-level 1.5-litre petrol engine (sDrive20i); it gets 168bhp and can officially move the car from 0-62mph in 8.3 seconds. A firm ride can be a nuisance, though.

Citroën C4
What Car? deal: Save £2597 on 1.2 PureTech 130 Plus or up to £6840 on the Citroën C4 range | Target Price £21,159 | Target PCP £291 per month
If you want the maximum amount of comfort for as little money as possible, then the C4 is the car for you. The suspension set-up is properly soft, which means it can glide over minor imperfections in the road surface and cushion you from most ruts and potholes. Refinement is impressive, too, with minimal wind and road noise on the motorway. In terms of engines, we think the 128bhp is the best fit for the C4; it can go from 0-62 in 8.9 seconds, which isn't particularly quick but it does get you up to 70mph easily enough.

Cupra Formentor
What Car? deal: Save £2615 on 1.5 eTSI 150 V1 or up to £2905 on the Cupra Formentor range | Target Price £32,870 | Target PCP £390 per month
If you're looking for a family SUV that's both sporty and stylish, then the Cupra Formentor is a great option. It’s surprisingly agile in the corners, plus it steers more sweetly than a Kia Sportage or Toyota C-HR, with better weighting and accuracy. It offers distinctive coupé SUV styling, too, but without massively compromising on space and practicality. The entry-level 1.5-litre mild hybrid petrol engine is our favourite version; it's quick enough and relatively cheap to run, plus it helps keep the price down.

Ford Kuga
What Car? deal: Save £2201 on a 2.5 FHEV ST-Line or up to £2860 on the Ford Kuga range | Target Price £36,374 | Target PCP £436 per month
Ford has just given its Kuga family SUV a mid-life facelift, with revised looks and an updated interior. As before, it's good to drive, spacious and well equipped. Our recommended ST-Line trim, for example, gives you a 12.3in digital driver's display and an electrically adjustable driver's seat as standard. This front-wheel drive hybrid version is smooth yet efficient to drive, too, and can average 53.3mpg, according to official tests. It's not quite as practical as some family SUVs, but it's well worth considering if you're looking for a hybrid option.

What Car? deal: Save £1564 on an Elegance or up to £1657 on the Honda e:Ny1 range | Target Price £38,431 | Target PCP £271 per month
The e:Ny1 and Honda HR-V are completely unrelated under the skin, despite looking almost identical from the outside. The key difference is the e:Ny1 is an electric SUV rather than a hybrid, and it's based on bespoke electric car underpinnings (this means it was designed to be electric from the get-go). Powering the e:Ny1 is a 201bhp electric motor that provides surprisingly nippy performance, with 0-62mph taking 7.2 seconds. Along with this, you get good body control in the corners but a firm ride, which means occupants will be jostled around a bit over bumps and undulations. The official range is decent at 256 miles, but it's no match for the single motor versions of the Kia EV6 or Renault Scenic.

Jaguar F-Pace
What Car? deal: Save £3332 on an 2.0 D200 R-Dynamic HSE Black 90th Anniversary Edition or up to £5245 on the Jaguar F-Pace range | Target Price £51,638 | Target PCP £445 per month
The F-Pace is Jaguar's family SUV, which means it competes with everything from the Audi Q5 to the Porsche Macan. It offers excellent handling and plenty of space inside, and most models come with plenty of standard equipment. The version quoted here is powered by a 201bhp 2.0-litre diesel that's impressively punchy from low revs (0-62mph takes 8.2 seconds officially). It should also average around 45mpg, according to official tests, which means it should be relatively cheap to run.

Kia Sportage
What Car? deal: Save £1991 on a 1.6T GDi 157 3 or up to £2578 on the Kia Sportage range | Target Price £30,899 | Target PCP £368 per month
Despite being offered with mild hybrid, hybrid and plug-in hybrid power options, we think the Sportage is actually at its best with the entry-level petrol engine. It's a 148bhp 1.6-litre petrol unit that provides strong performance around town and on the motorway. Plus, it's more affordable to buy than the mild hybrid, while also offering similar running costs. In terms of trim levels, 3 provides the best balance of kit for the money; it comes with electrically adjustable front seats, heated front and rear seats, and keyless entry as standard.

Land Rover Discovery Sport
What Car? deal: Save £2243 on a 2.0 D200 Dynamic SE or up to £2749 on the Land Rover Discovery Sport range | Target Price £46,122 | Target PCP £460 per month
The Discovery Sport is a more compact alternative to the Land Rover Discovery. And despite this, it's available with up to seven seats (on all versions other than the plug-in hybrid), plus there's plenty of room for five occupants inside. Interior quality is a strong suit too, with plenty of plush yet dense-feeling materials, which helps give it a durable feel. While the infotainment system is much better than it was before, Land Rover has now removed the physical climate controls, which makes it fiddly to make adjustments while driving. When it comes to standard kit, Dynamic SE is very well equipped and includes a 12-speaker Meridian sound system, a powered tailgate, a panoramic glass roof and keyless entry as standard.

Lexus LBX
What Car? deal: Save £669 on a 1.5 Premium Plus or up to £790 on the Lexus LBX range | Target Price £33,836 | Target PCP £395 per month
Discounts are now available on our 2024 Car of the Year – the Lexus LBX. It's a unique offering in the small SUV class, because it's compact, premium and powered by a hybrid engine. This combination makes it very appealing, because the interior feels solid, plush and built to last, while the hybrid system provides affordable running costs, with the front-wheel drive version offering an average official fuel economy rating of 62.7mpg. By comparison, the petrol-powered Audi Q2 35 TFSI and VW T-Roc 1.5 TSI can average 47.9mpg and 47.1mpg respectively. Other strengths include Lexus's stellar reliability record and a generous roster of standard equipment, with our recommended Premium Plus trim offering a 12.3in digital driver’s display, a head-up display, keyless entry and a powered tailgate.

Mazda CX-30
What Car? deal: Save £1858 on a 2.0 e-Skyactiv-X MHEV Centre-Line or up to £2854 on the Mazda CX-30 range | Target Price £27,007 | Target PCP £270 per month
The CX-30 has one of the best interiors of any small SUV. The dashboard is covered in squishy, expensive-looking materials, including lashings of leatherette in two colours. The 10.3in infotainment touchscreen is very intuitive to use, too, especially while driving; you control the system using a rotary controller that sits between the front seats. We much prefer the set-up to the touchscreen-only system in the Seat Arona and many other rivals. To optimise the CX-30's value, we think the mid-level Centre-Line is the best trim, because it gives you useful features such as heated front seats and adaptive cruise control for not a huge amount more than the entry-level Prime-Line version.

MG ZS EV
What Car? deal: Save £2655 on a SE EV or up to £2940 on the MG ZS range | Target Price £27,840 | Target PCP £380 per month
Electric SUVs can command hefty price tags, but not the MG ZS EV. It's roomy, smart inside and very competitively priced. The entry-level SE is the one to go for because of its mix of low cost and equipment; it comes with keyless entry, air-conditioning, adaptive cruise control, automatic LED lights and a leather-trimmed steering wheel as standard. Range isn't good by class standards at 198 official miles (which is less than a Kia Niro EV and Smart #1), but if you need to do longer journeys, consider the Long Range SE.

Mini Countryman JCW
What Car? deal: Save £1895 on a 2.0 John Cooper Works or up to £2363 on the Mini Countryman range | Target Price £39,680 | Target PCP £453 per month
The new Countryman isn’t very Mini, but that’s not a bad thing. This family SUV is very spacious inside, with a huge amount of head and leg room in the front and back seats. It’s stylish and good to drive, too, particularly with the punchy 296bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine and four-wheel drive system offered with this John Cooper Works version. With a 0-62mph time of 5.4 seconds, it's quicker off the line than a Mini Countryman Electric. It also comes with a slicker automatic gearbox than the regular petrol-powered C version, thanks to snappier shifts and a quicker response time.

Peugeot 3008
What Car? deal: Save £2010 on a 1.2 Hybrid 136 Allure or up to £2610 on the Peugeot 3008 range | Target Price £32,650 | Target PCP £353 per month
The Peugeot 3008 stands out more than ever thanks to its sharp looks and coupé SUV roofline. It's a similar story inside, because the interior is very smart with its futuristic design and mix of high-quality materials. All versions come with a slick 21in screen across the top of the dashboard too, which combines the infotainment system and digital driver's display. While it looks sharp and responds quickly, it's not the most intuitive system. Allure is our recommended trim level; it comes with a generous helping of standard kit, including LED headlights, keyless entry, dual-zone climate control and a wireless phone-charging pad.

Renault Austral
What Car? deal: Save £3291 on a E-Tech Full Hybrid Techno or up to £3681 on the Renault Austral range | Target Price £31,404 | Target PCP £325 per month
If you're looking for a family SUV that sips rather than guzzles fuel, the hybrid-powered Renault Austral is a good option. During our real-world driving test, it managed an impressive 49.4mpg on average, which is more than the Kia Sportage and Honda ZR-V achieved during the same test. In other areas, the Austral has a smart and reasonably practical interior, but it can’t quite match the Sportage for comfort, quality or boot space.

Seat Ateca
What Car? deal: Save £4514 on a 1.5 TSI EVO SE or up to £4899 on the Seat Ateca range | Target Price £26,046 | Target PCP £271 per month
The Ateca might be Seat's first SUV, but it's also one of the best family SUVs around. It's spacious inside, offers excellent handling and is keenly priced – and that's before you take our discount into account, too. All in all, it's a very impressive package. This entry-level SE version is very well equipped for the money, offering keyless entry, metallic paint and dual-zone climate control as standard, plus you get an 8.3in touchscreen infotainment system and wireless phone charging.

Toyota C-HR
What Car? deal: Save £2024 on a 1.8 Hybrid Design or up to £2564 on the Toyota C-HR range | Target Price £32,671 | Target PCP £338 per month
There are more practical family SUVs out there, but the Toyota C-HR is comfortable, easy to drive and super-frugal. We reckon the 1.8 Hybrid version is the engine to go for; it produces 138bhp and manages 0-62mph in 10.2 seconds. This means it's no speed demon, but it should get you up to motorway speeds with little fuss. Design is our recommended trim level, because as well as giving you the bigger 12.3in touchscreen as standard, it adds a fully digital driver's display, ambient interior lighting and heated front seats on top of the kit you get with the entry-level Icon trim.

Volkswagen Tiguan
What Car? deal: Save £1957 on a 1.5 eTSI 150 Life or up to £2604 on the Volkswagen Tiguan range | Target Price £34,773 | Target PCP £385 per month
Volkswagen has recently launched an all-new version of the Tiguan family SUV, and amazingly you can already get a big discount on one. That's great, because it's a very impressive offering with a vast interior, tidy driving manners and flexible rear seats. Life trim is also well equipped, with adaptive cruise control, ambient interior lighting and wireless phone-charging included as standard. The mid-level 148bhp mild hybrid petrol engine is good option for it, too, offering plenty of muscle for everyday driving.

Volvo XC40
What Car? deal: Save £1547 on a 2.0 B3P Plus or up to £8003 on the Volvo XC40 range | Target Price £38,263 | Target PCP £403 per month
A former What Car? Car of the Year, the Volvo X40 is brimming with both style and kit, while also being spacious inside and immensely practical. Our favourite engine is the entry-level B3 2.0-litre petrol, because it has plenty of punch and keeps costs down. The driving experience is also relaxing and comfortable, with a comfortable ride and a smooth automatic gearbox. Plus trim gives you plenty of goodies, too, including heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel and ambient interior lighting.
