Porsche planning new flagship electric SUV
Porsche's BMW iX rival will offer ultra-fast charging and be related to the next Taycan performance car...
Porsche has revealed plans to introduce a new electric SUV, which will sit above the upcoming electric Macan in the company’s range.
Due to go on sale in the second half of this decade, the as yet unnamed model will compete with the likes of the BMW iX and Tesla Model X.
Announcing the car, Porsche CEO Oliver Blume said: “We are targeting the higher-margin segments in particular and aim to tap into new sales opportunities in this way.”
Blume also confirmed that it will be based on newly developed mechanicals that will be shared with the next-generation Porsche Taycan and Porsche Panamera, meaning the latter model will become fully electric for the first time.
No other details have been confirmed yet, but all three cars should have 800v charging capability, allowing them to take on electricity at speeds of up to 350kW. That’s fast enough to get a 100kWh battery from 5-80% in approximately 20 minutes.
It’s also rumoured that the design of the new luxury SUV was shown to a group of North American dealers late last year.
At the time, dealers described seeing a car with a flatter rear-end and larger overall dimensions than today’s Porsche Macan and Porsche Cayenne.
The electric Macan isn’t related to the new flagship SUV; instead that has been developed alongside the Audi Q6 e-tron, with both of those models due to on sale in 2023.
Porsche claims that 80% of all the new cars it sells will be fully electric by 2030.
