Nissan sales success boosts workforce

The success of Nissan's Qashqai has boosted the workforce at the Sunderland factory where it's built.

The Qashqai was the ninth best-selling model in the UK in May, the first time it's entered the top 10. A total of 2629 models were sold, representing a 73% increase over May 2008.

Nissan's Micra and Note are built at the same factory and the combined success of all three models has led to Nissan taking on 250 new temporary workers to cope with the increased demand.

Nissan UK's Paul Willcox said: 'We're delighted with the Qashqai's jump into the top 10 best-sellers list. We know it's one of the strongest models on sale in the UK and this result is proof that the car-buying public agrees. Once again Nissan's daring design has been rewarded, benefiting the UK manufacturing industry in the process.'

As well as taking part in the Government's scrappage scheme, Nissan is offering a £2000 minimum trade-in against any of its Sunderland-built models that are between eight and 10 years old.
