New Tesla Model 3 and Jaguar XE vs BMW 3 Series: infotainment
The electric Tesla Model 3 provides a genuine alternative to petrol and diesel power for executive saloons. Let’s see if it can beat the fossil-fuelled BMW 3 Series and Jaguar XE...
Infotainment systems
BMW 3 Series
The 3 Series gets BMW’s latest iDrive system with a super-sharp 12.3in screen. It’s by far the easiest system to use, because it can be controlled by touch as well as a dial between the front seats. The latter is much less distracting to use on the move. However, it’s a shame that Apple CarPlay smartphone mirroring only works for a year before you have to pay for a subscription. Android Auto isn’t even available.
The new system is a big improvement on the pre-facelifted XE’s, but it’s nothing spectacular by modern executive car standards. The 10.0in touchscreen is a bit fiddly to use while driving and the screen resolution could also be better. Unlike the others, smartphone integration for Apple and Android devices is standard, but you might want to consider upgrading the sound system (prices from £600).
Tesla Model 3
Everything is controlled via a massive (15.0in) touchscreen; you even have to use it to open the charging port or unlock the glovebox. It’s more distracting to use than the iDrive system in the 3 Series, but at least the graphics are sharp and the screen responds promptly to prods. Frustratingly, you can’t have Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Sat-nav is standard, but it lacks online connectivity.
