You’d be forgiven for thinking that with the smallest display, the Q7’s infotainment system is feeling its age. But what it lacks in visual pizzazz it more than makes up for with speed and functionality. Controlling the system requires you to twist and press a dial behind the gear selector (which conveniently acts as a wrist rest) – a process that’s much simpler when driving than stabbing away at a touchscreen.

The Discovery has a touchscreen, so it’s inherently more distracting to use when you’re driving than Audi’s system. Why? Because you need to keep your eye on the screen while you reach forward to make sure you hit the icon you want. The resolution of the display isn’t very impressive, either, and it can be sluggish to respond to inputs. Consider the Meridian sound system (£530)if you usually listen to music.

Mercedes’ latest system can be controlled by touching the screen, swiping and pressing on a large touchpad between the front seats or using a pair of tiny touchpads on the steering wheel. The touchpads are the easiest when you’re driving; the main one provides haptic feedback to help you navigate the menus. The GLE has the best voice recognition, too; you can use natural speech to control a multitude of functions.
