There are many reasons why SUVs are so popular, but it's largely because they offer a lot of what new car buyers are looking for. Whether that's a high driving position to give a good view of the road, a feeling of safety, or a practical, spacious interior for hauling around a family, you'll find an SUV that has it covered.
It's easy to understand why they've become so fashionable; it seems everybody wants a small SUV, a luxury SUV, or even a sports SUV.
In this feature, we name the newest SUV in every brand's line-up, with each car being categorised by what we've driven most recently. Where applicable, we'll also show you the Target Price you should be aiming for if you decide to haggle with a dealer. Alfa Romeo

Aston Martin

Last year, Aston Martin launched a new high-performance variant of its DBX SUV, known as the DBX707. It features the same 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine (sourced from Mercedes-AMG) as the standard car, but its power has been lifted to a staggering 697bhp. That means it can blitz from 0-62mph in a supercar-quick 3.3sec, while also being very sharp to drive.

Audi

Bentley

The Bentley Bentayga in EWB long-wheelbase form is the newest version of the firm's luxury SUV. And whether you're in the driver's seat or relaxing as a passenger, it seriously impresses, particularly compared with rivals such as the Aston Martin DBX and Lamborghini Urus. That's all thanks to its beautiful, spacious interior, well-tuned suspension and powerful 4.0-litre V8 engine.

The X7 has recently been updated with tweaked styling, new mild hybrid engines and upgraded interior technology. However, BMW hasn't messed with the recipe too much, because it remains incredibly luxurious – and that's largely thanks to its vast interior. Indeed, even those in the third row of seats will be comfortable. Our favourite version is the xDrive40d in M Sport trim, the former of which provides surprisingly good fuel economy.

BYD

BYD (short for Build Your Dreams) is a Chinese car company that has recently launched in Europe with a new electric SUV – the Atto 3. While it's far from groundbreaking in any area (for example, it's not that quick to charge), it's a competent offering that has a smart interior and tidy driving manners.

Citroën

The Citroën e-C4 X is rather unique, because it's a saloon version of the fully electric e-C4 coupé SUV. You might think that its saloon shape brings disadvantages, but it actually has a bigger boot than its sibling, and its only a fraction more expensive to buy. Elsewhere, it gets an upgraded infotainment system and more kit as standard.

The Cupra Formentor is essentially a sportier, coupé version of the Seat Ateca. And despite its sloping roofline, it'll still seat four tall adults comfortably while retaining a decent level of practicality. Being a Cupra (Seat's sporty sister brand) it also handles well, and if you stick with our favourite 1.5 TSI V1 version, it's hardly expensive and yet very well equipped.

Dacia

Dacia has recently adopted a new look for its cars, and the Duster has been updated with a new logo and grille design to suit. But other than these visual tweaks, the car follows the same format as ever; it's still a practical SUV that's incredibly good value, albeit slightly flawed in the quality and handling department. However, that's the price you pay for a car that undercuts all of its family SUV rivals to buy outright.

DS

If you're after an electric SUV with an eye-catching design and a smart interior, the DS 3 E-Tense is a decent option. We think it makes the most sense in Performance Line + trim, which comes with a 10.3in infotainment screen, keyless entry and 18in alloy wheels. It's worth noting that rivals such as the Smart #1 and Kia Niro EV can travel farther between charges.

Ferrari

The idea of a Ferrari SUV would have been unthinkable a few years ago, but that all changes with the Purosangue, although isn't labelled as such – Ferrari doesn't like the term 'SUV'. The Purosangue is the first five-door production car Ferrari has ever produced – and the most practical. Naturally, it's sportily set up, with a bespoke aluminium structure, adaptive suspension and a spectacular 715bhp 6.5-litre V12, all of which combine to make it one of the most engaging (and expensive) SUVs you can buy.

Fiat

It may have distinctive styling, but beneath the surface the Fiat 600e is very closely related to the Jeep Avenger and Peugeot e-2008. Like those cars, it's comfortable and competitively priced, plus it has a good official range. Charging speeds are also decent: a 10-80% charge takes around 27 minutes with a suitably powerful charging point, which is quicker than the Hyundai Kona Electric and MG ZS EV.

Ford has recently added a 168bhp 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine to the Ford Puma ST line-up. And unlike the 198bhp 1.5-litre engine, it uses an automatic gearbox to shift through the gears. On paper, factors such as the improved fuel economy and lower CO2 emission appeal, but the 1.5-litre version is more fun to drive.

Genesis

The Electrified GV70 is the latest model to be launched by Genesis – Hyundai Group's luxury arm. Essentially an electric version of the combustion-powered GV70, and the 'Electrified' model is a much more refined (and quicker) alternative. It now sits alongside the other electric cars in the firm's line-up, including the Electrified G80 and GV60.

Honda

With very similar looks, you might think that the e:Ny1 is closely related to the Honda HR-V family SUV. However, beneath the surface the two cars a very different, most notably because the e:Ny1 is fully electric. Indeed, it comes with a single, front-mounted electric motor and a 62kWh (usable) battery, which means it can travel 256 miles officially between full charges. That's similar to what the Jeep Avenger and Smart #1 can achieve. However, it can't charge as quickly as those cars.

With its funky RoboCop-esque looks, the new Kona Electric has a vastly different design to the car that came before it. Not only that, but it's slightly bigger than before, so it's much more spacious inside. Range is up too, and with the larger battery (our recommended option) it can now travel 319 miles officially. That's more than the Kia Niro EV and Smart #1 can manage.

Ineos

The Grenadier has an interesting backstory, because not only is it named after a pub, but it's also the brainchild of billionaire businessman Jim Ratcliffe. Inspired by the Land Rover Defender, the Grenadier is designed to be very capable off-road. So, this means you get permanent four-wheel drive, locking differentials and a 800mm wading depth. However, this mud-plugging ability does come at the cost of comfort and on-road driving manners.

Jaguar

Jaguar's only electric car – the I-Pace – has recently been revised, with the most significant updates being a new blanked-off grille and a new set of trim levels. Our favourite is R-Dynamic SE Black, which comes with sportier looks, a powered tailgate and heated and electrically adjustable front seats. In other areas it remains largely unchanged.

Jeep

The Avenger is slighty different to Jeeps that have come before it, and that's largely because it's fully electric. In terms of its size, it's also a lot smaller than most cars in the Jeep line-up; it's a sister model to the Renegade family SUV. Thankfully, it's a lot better to drive than that car, and it also has a longer range than other similarly-sized electric SUVs – including the Peugeot e-2008.

Kia

The stats for the Kia EV6 GT – 577bhp, 162mph, 0-62mph in 3.5 seconds – sound like the numbers for something very exotic. However, these are stats for the hottest version of our 2022 Car of the Year, the Kia EV6 – a very practical machine. In other words, Kia has taken our favourite electric SUV and turned it into a performance car. But while it delivers truly exhilarating performance while retaining its practicality, it is very expensive and prefers straight roads to twisty ones.

The Urus is Lamborghini's only SUV, competing with models from rival luxury brands, such as Bentley, Aston Martin and Rolls-Royce. And despite being outrageously fast and fun to drive, it's also surprisingly spacious and comfortable – even on 22in wheels. In fact, it's practical enough to use everyday, and that's not something that can be said for most Lamborghinis.

Land Rover

As with the original model, the Land Rover Defender is available in three configurations – a three-door 90, a five-door 110 and a long-wheelbase 130. In this instance, the latter is the newest SUV to join the Land Rover ranks. But unlike the original Defender 130 (which was a long-wheelbase pick-up truck), this version keeps its roof and utilises its extra length for some additional boot space and the option of eight seats (rather than seven in the 110).

Lexus

The RZ is quite an important car for Lexus, because it's the Japanese brand's first bespoke electric car. We say 'bespoke' here because the RZ has been designed to be electric from the ground up, whereas the UX300e is an electric version of the UX hybrid. On the face of it it's a good electric SUV that's quiet, comfortable and practical. It's worth noting, though, that the Genesis GV60 and Tesla Model Y can travel farther between charges.

Maserati is going through a period of renaissance and has recently launched an array of new models. One of which is the Grecale sports SUV, which is a rival for the BMW X3 and Porsche Macan. It's a compelling alternative to those cars, with capable handling, a spacious interior and a luxurious feel. However, the Macan still beats it in all of those areas.

Mazda

What does the Mazda MX-30 R-EV have in common with the old RX-8 sports car? Well, a couple of things actually, because it has rear doors that open backwards and a rotary engine (which is much smaller and higher-revving than a normal engine). However, the R-EV isn't powered solely by the engine, because it's a range-extender hybrid. This means that an electric motor powers the wheels, and the engine charges the battery to give it a longer range than the fully electric MX-30.

The EQS SUV does exactly what is says on the tin, because it's an SUV version of the EQS luxury car. Indeed, this means that it's the German brand's flagship electric SUV. And as you would expect, it feels very luxurious with its comfortable ride, impressive refinement and lengthy range. However, it is quite expensive, plus the interior finish could be better for the money.

MG

The MG HS is a hugely popular family SUV, which is largely a result of its keen pricing. So, to help it stay relevant, MG has given it a refresh with a tweaked exterior design. In other areas, such as the interior, it's very similar to the outgoing model, but that's no bad thing because it's a decent all-rounder. All cars come well equipped, with SE trim giving you LED headlights, keyless entry and automatic wipers as standard.

Mini

The Countryman is quite long in the tooth, but it's still Mini's newest SUV – in fact, it's the only SUV Mini currently makes. While it offers a beautifully finished interior and an excellent infotainment system, many rivals are cheaper and better equipped (especially the Ford Puma, which is also much more fun to drive). It's worth noting, though, that an all-new third-generation Countryman is due to arrive next year.

Nissan now makes a wide range of SUVs, including the X-Trail 7-seater. While it's not quite as well-rounded as the Hyundai Santa Fe, it's a spacious, comfortable and quiet cruiser. The e-Power hybrid system also brings smooth driving manners, although it's not that impressive when it comes to fuel economy. N-Connecta trim is our favourite, and comes with a 12.3in digital driver's display, keyless entry and wireless phone-charging as standard.

Peugeot

The Peugeot 2008 has always been a solid choice in the small SUV class. And following a recent update, it remains as such. It has a classy interior, punchy engines and a generous equipment list. Go with the PureTech 130 in Allure trim for the best compromise on value and standard equipment. That said, the Ford Puma and Volkswagen T-Roc are still better all-rounders.

Porsche

The third-generation Porsche Cayenne has been heavily updated for 2023. We say heavily, because it gets a new interior, various chassis tweaks (for improved handling and ride comfort) and a power boost. Being the final generation of Cayenne to be offered with an internal combustion engine, we'd recommend going for the Cayenne S; it gets a monstrous 4.0-litre V8 petrol engine with a colossal 468bhp.

Renault

Renault's newest SUV is the Austral – a hybrid-only replacement for the Kadjar family SUV. With its hybrid engine set-up, it's an efficient entry to the class that includes a smart, tech-filled interior and a decent ride. It's worth noting, though, that the Kia Sportage trounces it in almost every area – especially when it comes to space and practicality.

Rolls-Royce

If the Rolls-Royce Cullinan is on your shopping list, you're probably not too worried about running costs or price. That's fortunate, because the Cullinan luxury SUV is extremely expensive to buy and run. What it does offer, though, is effortless performance, superb refinement and a wonderfully opulent interior.

Seat

Along with the Seat Ibiza, the Seat Arona has just received a mild update and remains a great choice in the small SUV category. It undercuts many of its rivals on price, plus it has good space inside for most people and it's one of the more enjoyable cars to drive in its class.

Skoda

The standard Skoda Enyaq iV is one of our favourite electric cars, but if a sporty aesthetic is more your thing, the new Enyaq Coupé iV could be a better alternative. It combines practicality, decent range and ample levels of power with a new-found sense of style. Despite its looks (and the vRS name), though, it's still not that much fun to drive.

Ssangyong

Ssangyong's newest SUV is the Rexton, and it's a great workhorse that's ideal for towing with. Elsewhere, it's well priced and comes with lots of kit, but poor handling and an overly firm ride make it difficult to recommend compared with much better alternatives.

Subaru

The Solterra is Subaru's first electric car, and is very closely related to the Toyota bZ4X. Despite being more expensive than its sibling, it is refined, comfortable and surprisingly good off road (but then again, so is the bZ4X in four-wheel drive form).

Suzuki

There are more upmarket small SUVs, but the Suzuki Vitara is one of the most spacious and is great value for money. Tesla

Tesla recently added a new entry-level version to the Model Y line-up, called the RWD. And despite being the cheapest version, it can still travel an impressive 283 miles if you opt for 19in wheels, or 267 miles on 20in wheels (officially). But whichever model you go for, the Y is a great electric SUV in fields such as performance, practicality and residuals.

Toyota

Toyota was early into the electrification game, launching the Toyota Prius more than 20 years ago, yet the new-for-2022 bZ4X is Toyota's first fully electric car, and it's a fine all-rounder that's great to drive and very spacious. Our preferred version is the 150kW front-wheel-drive model, which can travel 317 miles on a single charge according to official tests.
Model Grandland | Version 1.6 Hybrid 4X4 GSe | List price £43,700 | Target Price £43,700 | Target PCP £340 | What Car? rating 2 stars out of 5
Vauxhall has recently launched a new performance sub-brand called GSe, and it's a badge that now graces the most powerful version of the Grandland family SUV. Combining a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine with an electric motor and battery, the plug-in hybrid system produces 286bhp. Despite offering quick straight line performance, it is very expensive – especially when you compare it with other plug-in hybrid family SUVs.

Volkswagen

The Volkswagen ID 5 comes with plenty of kit, a decent range and an excellent safety score. However, rivals including the Genesis GV60, Kia EV6 and Volvo C40 Recharge are faster, smarter inside, have much better infotainment systems and take less time to charge.

Volvo

If you’re sold on the looks and can accept the practicality penalties of the coupé-styled Volvo C40 Recharge, it stacks up well compared with its immediate competition, especially on performance. It’s also a refined and pleasant electric car to drive, justifying its premium billing. However, the regular Volvo XC40 Recharge is cheaper and offers similar performance.
