Car of the Year Awards 2021: Best MPV for value

For those who value space and versatility above style, MPVs make great buys. We’re looking for a car that’s pleasant to drive and spend time in, as well as good value and ruthlessly practical...

The real joy of the latest Berlingo is that it retains the out-and-out practicality and value for which this van-based MPV has a well-earned reputation, yet it adds a sheen of sophistication. With Citroën’s vans and passenger cars now closely related under the skin, the Berlingo handles with more deftness than before, and it also feels modern but durable inside.

As for that resoundingly brilliant practicality, you can choose a five or seven-seat model; our favourite is the former. The seats don’t do anything clever, but there’s acres of room, as well as sliding rear doors for easy access. The cavernous 775 litres of boot space beneath the parcel shelf also puts far bigger estates and SUVs to shame.

The Berlingo is fantastic value, too. Our pick of the range comes in at just over £20,000 (after Target Price discounts), with automatic lights and wipers, air-con, cruise control and an 8.0in infotainment touchscreen included. It’s a lot of MPV for the money, even by the high standards of value-driven rivals such as the Ford Tourneo Connect and Peugeot Rifter.
