Car of the Year Awards 2021: Best family car for value
There are several types of family car, but here we’re looking at traditional hatchbacks: large enough to be practical, yet compact enough to be easy and enjoyable to drive...
Skoda Scala 1.0 TSI 110 SE
The Scala’s looks might not grab your attention, but its low price tag certainly will. Compare it with a similarly equipped Ford Focus or Volkswagen Golf, for example, and the Scala will set you back thousands of pounds less.
But this car doesn’t just get an award here because it’s cheap; it’s also exceptionally roomy inside. There’s a huge boot – bigger than those of most rivals – and spacious seating for five. That makes it one of the most practical cars you can buy for the money.
All of this would be for nowt if the Scala were horrible to drive. Happily, that couldn’t be further from the truth. It rides bumps smoothly and comfortably, and while it isn’t quite as much fun to chuck around as the likes of the Focus, it still handles neatly and predictably.
Fuel economy is a strength, too, so altogether, this is a car that offers terrific value for money; you really can get more for less. So, if you need room for the family at a bargain price, look no further.
