Funky looks are only a part of the C3 Aircross' appeal, because this small SUV also offers impressive seating flexibility and plenty of options to personalise your car. It's cheaper to buy than many rivals, too, even before you take our discount into consideration. 8. Suzuki Vitara 1.4 Boosterjet SZ5 Allgrip
List price: £26,499 | Price after What Car? discount: £22,127 | Saving: £4372, or 16.50% off list price
The Vitara is one of our favourite low-cost small SUVs, and this 1.4-litre petrol-engine is pleasantly sprightly, offering an appreciative extra dose of power compared with the lesser 1.0-litre petrol engine that's also offered. SZ5 trim gives you lots of upmarket features, including adaptive cruise control, keyless entry and a panoramic sunroof.

7. Seat Ateca 1.0 TSI Ecomotive SE
List price: £22,635 | Price after What Car? discount: £18,672 | Saving: £3963, or 17.51% off list price
The Ateca is a family SUV that focuses on being great to drive – so it offers class-leading handling and a strong range of engines. In fact, despite only having 113bhp on offer, we think the 1.0-litre petrol engine you get here will suit you fine if you'll mainly be driving in town. Elsewhere, the Ateca offers plenty of space for passengers and their luggage, while keen pricing keeps it competitive – and that's before you save more than 17% on the list price with our deal.

5. Nissan Juke 1.6 Acenta
List price: £17,465 | Price after What Car? discount: £24,205 | Saving: £3260, or 18.66% off list price
An all-new Juke might be about to go on sale, but that means that dealers are willing to heavily discount the original version in order to get it out of their showrooms. Don't dismiss this Juke as being old-hat, either, because aside from its funky looks, this small SUV is a doddle to drive in town thanks to light steering and decent visibility. Acenta models offer climate control, a USB port and Bluetooth connectivity, too.
List price: £28,060 | Price after What Car? discount: £22,769 | Saving: £5291, or 18.86% off list price
Hyundai's family SUV counts the big-selling Nissan Qashqai and the excellent Seat Ateca among its key rivals, so the stakes couldn't be higher. We've been impressed with its spacious interior, and the fact that you get a lot of equipment as standard. Hyundai offers an impressive five-year, unlimited-mileage warranty too.

The X-Trail is the only car on this list that's available with seven seats, and while those seats may best be kept for smaller adults and shorter journeys, they do offer an extra level of practicality over the other cars listed here. This 1.7-litre diesel engine produces 148bhp, so has enough oomph to get you up to motorway speeds without any hassle.

2. Nissan Qashqai 1.5 dCi N-Connecta
List price: £26,400 | Price after What Car? discount: £20,837 | Saving: £5563, or 21.07% off list price
Ask a random member of the public to picture a family SUV in their heads, and chances are they'll be thinking of the Nissan Qashqai. This Japanese SUV has become synonymous with practical, family friendly motoring, and with good reason. It offers surefooted handling and a comfortable ride, it's reasonably spacious inside and the 1.5-litre diesel engine you get here is both quiet and smooth. N-Connecta models come with keyless entry and privacy glass, too.
List price: £25,505 | Price after What Car? discount: £19,984 | Saving: £5521, or 21.65% off list price
The Grandland X is Vauxhall's largest SUV, but is roughly the same size as family SUVs like the Qashqai and Peugeot 3008. In fact, it's based on the latter, so offers many of the same space and practicality benefits as that car. The 1.5-litre diesel engine you get here will suit high-mileage drivers, and while SE trim isn't loaded with luxury, the fact that you're saving more than 21% in the first place means you've lots of change left over to raid the options list.
