Volkswagen Passat

The Volkswagen Passat straddles the fine line separating the likes of the Audi A4 and BMW 3 Series from mass-market saloons such as the Skoda Superb. It has a smattering of badge appeal, but its prices are also reasonable – especially when you factor in that the relatively low CO2 emissions of its engines keep costs down for company car drivers. Those wanting Audi's four rings evidently aren't so easily turned, however, because their interest in the Passat declines over time.

The Volkswagen Golf could be an appealing alternative if buyers decide the A4 is too expensive and/or too large for their needs. Indeed, like the Passat, the Golf straddles the line separating premium family hatchbacks such as the Audi A3 Sportback and BMW 1 Series and mass-market options like the Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra. The 1.5-litre turbo petrol-engined Golf is our top choice.

Why stop at an Audi A4? For some buyers, looking further up Audi's range leads to the A6 – a rival for the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E-Class. Like both of its rivals, this luxury saloon has quiet engines and a comfortable interior, but it's not the most thrilling car in its class to drive.
