Spotting a gap in the market is often key to a successful business. With that in mind, the new Polestar 6 steps into a niche in the car market as an electric convertible sports car, and at the moment it has no direct rivals.
Shown here in concept form, the 6 will crown the Polestar line-up as its new flagship model. As its name suggests, it will sit above the upcoming Polestar 5 – the brand’s answer to the Porsche Taycan. The 5 and 6 will be very similar under the skin because both cars feature the company’s all-new ultra-stiff underpinnings.
The 6 will be powered by two electric motors, one on the front axle and one on the rear, to give it four-wheel drive. Combined, the two motors produce 872bhp and 664 lb/ft of torque. That makes it considerably more powerful than the Taycan Turbo S and Audi RS E-Tron GT (they produce 751bhp and 637bhp respectively).
The 6 is expected to be able to propel itself from 0-62mph in just 3.2sec, which is faster than the RS E-Tron GT’s 3.3sec sprint time.
Polestar has not yet revealed battery details, but the 6 is likely to have a capacity in the region of 100kWh. That would place it in line with the Taycan Turbo S, which has a 93.4kWh battery. The 6 should have an official range of approximately 300 miles between charges, which would be slightly more than the Taycan Turbo S (291 miles).
The 6 will come with 800V charging, which increases the voltage when charging the car, lowering the overall charging time. The Taycan, which has 800V charging too, takes just an hour to get from 10-80% using a 50kW public charger, and around 20 minutes with a 270kW charger. There are very few locations in the UK capable of delivering 270kW, but that could change by the time the Polestar 6 is available.
Design wise, the car takes inspiration from the Polestar Precept concept, with its sharp twin LED headlights, strong rear haunches and rear LED light bar. Overall, the design is minimalist, which is a theme seen on the brand's existing models.
The minimalist theme continues inside the 6, with most functions controlled through two screens. One is the digital driver’s display and the other is an 11.0in touchscreen that sits in the centre of the dashboard.
The central screen is likely to control most of the cars functions through an Android-based infotainment system (as found in the Polestar 2). From our experience in that car, it's a good system with crisp graphics and a quick response, but we prefer more physical controls because they help to minimise distraction while driving.
Polestar has not yet released full specifications for the 6, but it is likely to cost from £165,000 when the production car launches in 2026. That's more expensive than the Taycan Turbo S, which starts at £142,000.
