When it comes to holidays, many of us choose Spain over Germany because of the promise of sandy beaches, guaranteed sun and enticing Med cuisine. With car makers, on the other hand, we often go the opposite way – but perhaps sporty Spanish car brand Cupra could change that with its new UrbanRebel electric SUV.
The UrbanRebel will share mechanicals with the upcoming Volkswagen ID.2, so it will offer a combination of German-engineered underpinnings and sporty Spanish style. That should help endear it to buyers looking for the best of both worlds.
Based on what we know so far, the UrbanRebel sounds like a promising addition to Cupra's range. It’ll be offered with up to 223bhp, which is expected to propel it from 0-62mph in 6.9sec, and a battery capacity of around 60kWh, for an estimated range of more than 270 miles. That puts it up against the Smart #1 with its 66kWh battery and predicted range of 273 miles.
A lower-powered version of the UrbanRebel with a smaller battery could also be on the way, helping to keep the entry-level price low. That version is likely to get a battery in the region of 40kWh, delivering a range of about 200 miles, and a power output of approximately 180bhp. That’s about the same as you’ll find in the Peugeot e-208 and other small electric hatchbacks.
Like the larger Cupra Born and its Volkswagen ID.3 sibling, one key area where the UrbanRebel will look to distinguish itself from the ID.2 will be with its design.
It gives off a strong, chunky SUV look with a sharp front end and heavily sculpted bodywork – as seen on the Cupra Formentor. Size-wise, the UrbanRebel is 4.0m long, 2.0m wide and 1.6m high. That makes it a similar length and width to the e-208.
Being based on bespoke electric car underpinnings, the UrbanRebel should have a flat floor inside – which is good news for leg room – because there’s no need for components such as a gearbox tunnel as you would find on a petrol or diesel powered car.
Inside, the UrbanRebel has a big-car feel, with a floating centre console, curved infotainment display and hidden air vents. The interior design is very driver focused, giving it a sportier feel. What’s more, many of the materials used will be made of recycled and sustainable materials.
Pricing and specifications are yet to be confirmed, but we expect the UrbanRebel to start from approximately £25,000 for the lower-powered version with the smaller battery, and £30,000 for the more powerful 231bhp model with the larger battery. That means it should undercut the Peugeot e-208, which starts at £29,760.

Alongside the UrbanRebel, Cupra has previewed two other new SUVs: the Terramar and the Tavascan.
The Terramar, believed to be a replacement for the Cupra Ateca, will join the line-up in 2024. It will be offered with conventional petrol engines, which are likely to be 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre turbocharged units, as well as a plug-in hybrid with around 62 miles of range. We expect it to start from around £40,000, which would place it below the sleeker Formentor in the Cupra model range.
Cupra’s first electric SUV, the Tavascan, will also be launched in 2024. Power will come from two electric motors (one on each axle, giving four-wheel drive), which are fed by a 77kWh battery. The Tavascan's estimated range of 279 miles is longer than the official range of the Audi e-tron but less than the Jaguar I-Pace can manage. It is expected to undercut both those cars and cost from approximately £60,000.
