2023 Fisker Ocean electric SUV revealed: price, specs and release date

Some brands need to work harder than others to grab your attention. Shaolin makes smart watches that can do most of what an Apple Watch can do, for example, but only one of those brands has queues around the corner whenever it launches a new product. The same is true of cars – but while you might not have heard of its maker, there are good reasons to pay attention to the new Fisker Ocean electric SUV.

For one thing, it looks suitably 22nd century, with ultra-thin LED headlights and tail-lights, a sloping rear end reminiscent of a coupé SUV, and muscular haunches. Fisker boss Henrik Fisker may be best known for the ill-fated Karma range-extender electric sports car, but he has some impressive design credits to his name, including the Aston Martin V8 Vantage and BMW Z8 sports cars. 

The Ocean has impressive specifications, too. The entry-level model is powered by a single 275bhp motor driving the front wheels, allowing the Ocean to sprint from 0-60mph in 6.6sec. This version can take you up to 275 miles between charges.

Stepping up to Ultra trim brings a second motor to drive the rear wheels and a bigger battery, boosting power to 540bhp and upping the range to 390 miles – farther than key rivals such as the Audi Q4 e-tron, BMW iX3 and Skoda Enyaq iV can go on a full charge.

The range-topping Extreme, meanwhile, gets 550bhp and can cover the 0-60mph sprint in just 3.6sec – only slightly slower than a Tesla Model 3 Performance. This version also gets solar panels on the roof that Fisker says can add 1500 miles of range per year in sunny regions.

Fisker hasn’t yet confirmed how the capacity of the Ocean’s batteries, but it’s likely to be able to charge at a rate of 250kW – faster than most rivals and promising a 10-80% top-up in as little as 20 minutes.

Inside the five-seat interior, a 17.1in infotainment touchscreen controls most functions. This can rotate from portrait to landscape mode when the car is stopped, allowing occupants to, say, watch a film while the car charges. Wireless over-the-air updates will add new features and upgrade existing ones over time.

With prices starting from £34,990, the Ocean represents a significant bargain compared with the Q4 and iX3; in fact, it’s only an Apple Watch’s worth more than the Enyaq.
