2019 Volkswagen T-Cross - reader test team review

Volkswagen expects worldwide sales of SUVs to increase by around 65% over the next
decade – and they’re far from unpopular as it is.

So, it has developed its fifth and smallest high-rider, the T-Cross. Sharing its chassis with the Polo hatchback, it’s 127mm shorter than the T-Roc. However, it offers good space for a car of its type and a 6.5in or 8.0in touchscreen infotainment system, while presenting plenty of possibilities for personalisation. Engines are two three-cylinder 1.0-litre turbo petrols, a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol and a 1.6-litre diesel.

Will it be another sales hit? We took readers to Volkswagen’s factory in Wolfsburg, Germany, to find out.

“Neither of my cars is perfectly suited to daily life, so I’m looking for something to join them that’s practical but still stands out.

“Interior quality is important to me, but no small SUV is really known for that yet. However, the materials inside the T-Cross feel really good.

“From the outside, too, there’s an air of quality about the car’s look. Most rivals are funky, while this is mature but exciting.

“I love the styling at the rear; the full-width strip isn’t actually a light, rather a reflector, but it still looks fantastic. It’s just different from other Volkswagens.

“The largest wheels available are 18in across, which is a shame; another inch or two would make a big difference to the look. It could also do with visible exhaust pipes.

“The graphics on the screens inside are really sharp, while it’s cool to have the numerous personalisation options. The [optional] 300W Beats stereo sounds surprisingly good, and the cool brand will appeal to people.

“My main worry is engine options. I’d want the 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, rather than a little 1.0-litre unit; 113bhp just isn’t enough for me.”
